Life of Pi is an extraordinarily beautiful tale of a young shipwreck survivor on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker. If this sounds silly, it is to author Yann Martel’s credit that the feel this story has is far from it.

That’s not to say that there isn’t a healthy dollop of humor throughout the novel’s pages. At a very young age Pi witnesses his parents confronted with a Muslim imam, a Catholic priest and a Hindu pandit on the streets of Pondicherry, India, there to discuss their son’s religious studies. Poignant commentary on interfaith dialogue aside, the way these three come to realize that Pi has been searching for God via three different religions reads like a barroom joke. Later, while contemplating how best to handle his predicament at sea, Pi soberly lists his Plans Number One through Seven in such a calm, rational manner as to force the reader into chuckling over the ridiculousness of the predicament.

This line of dialogue, spoken by the character of Britta in The Drifters, is one of the best examples of a final sentence in a novel I have ever read. If James A. Michener was anything at all, he was a man with a point. With a great many points, in fact.

I’m not ashamed to admit I was a bit nervous about entering a cell phone store after five years. I fully expected to be surrounded by devices I wouldn’t even recognize: little windows to the Internet or television or electronic books that would require skills to operate that I have no intention of ever possessing, though I know I will have to some day. And I realize this reluctance to learn makes me a terrible hypocrite because I used to be an educator. Hypocritical or not, I say teach me about Homer or Pythagoras but please keep away with your modern doohickeys.

Of course, what I was about to experience that rainy November night actually had very little to do with my fears going in …

This week we bring you what may be a new series, which in itself is a new installment in a series of experimental series-es, entitled Bloom’s Political Digest. Matt was inspired by not only his nerdy interest in politics, but also by how much he cares about the current health care debate and trying to make sense out of it.

There are millions in this country who are dying or will die because they have no access to the current health care system. The debate on how to reform that system has been raging for decades and now it appears we have a president and a Congress that are willing to spend much time and political capital on contributing to a solution. If we as citizens of this country are not informed we will idly stand by while our government either passes horribly irresponsible laws or allows an incredible opportunity for beneficial change slip away.
